Good opportunities

After graduating from Hue College of Education, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai (living in Phong My, Phong Dien) could not find a suitable job, so she ended up having a blue-collar job. As the low wage of this job and family’s poverty do not allow to her to afford living expenses, Mai decided to apply for the housemaid position in Saudi Arabia. She has been working in this country for more than a year, and she is the first person from Thua Thien Hue to work overseas under this program.

Being contacted via Facebook, Mai said that she had a very comfortable life overseas. “The main responsibility of the job is doing housework with reasonable working time and little stress. The host family has treated me so well. They are nice and take care of me when I am sick. Once I adapted to the new life, I did not have as many obstacles as I had thought I would have when living far away from home.” Mai also said that the host family paid all the living expenses, meals and essential furnitures, so Mai can save all of her wages (nine million VND a month) and send them to her family. “After a year of working overseas, I have just sent home 100 million VND for my parents to get the house rebuilt. I could not have done this if I had worked for a year in Hue,” Mai said.

Like Mai, Mrs. Hoang Thi Hang (in Phong Dien town) has been in Saudi Arabia to work as a housemaid for seven months. In her hometown, life is hard. Hang and her husband have always been struggling as they cannot live on their incomes to raise three children who need to go to school and have proper meals. Hang shared: “Labor export is a way to get my family out of poverty. The hostess is very kind and cares about everything from meals to accomodations. I am very lucky to be here. Living far away from my family makes me homesick, but my husband, my kids and I often encourage each other that two years will go fast. Thanks to Facebook, we still keep in touch and have a chat with each other everyday to reduce the homesickness.” Mrs. Hang added that although the customs of foreign countries are different, she was not too surprised and quickly adapted thanks to the trainings in Vietnam.

Free-of-fee labor export

From the program signed between Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs of Vietnam and Saudi Arabia, from April 2014, Thien An Construction, Manpower Supply and Import – Export JSC ( Thanh Hoa city) recruit housemaids to work in Saudi Arabia for two years. The special point is that the program is fee exempt. All of the visa fees, return flight tickets, living costs are paid by the host families. One week  after departure, the employees also receive ten million VND from the host families. With the wage of nine million VND/month, after two years, employees can save over 200 million VND. After the first 2 years, if they continue to register to work, the wage will increase to 10.5 million VND/month.

Ms. Pham Thi Bon, a representative of Thien An company in Thua Thien Hue said: “Before coming to Saudi Arabia to work, employees are taught Arabic (pidgin Arabic that even illiterates can learn) for one month and a half. Employees are also prepared with knowledge of customs, manners, training in doing housework such as: using machines, tools, ironing, cleaning the house, babysitting, etc. so that they are less likely to be overwhelmed in a new country. Trainers are housemaids who used to work in Saudi Arabia for three to four years.

In Thua Thien Hue, this program has recently been initiated by Thien An company since March 2017 and has sent eight employees in Phong Dien, Huong Tra, Hue city to work in Saudi Arabia. Ms. Pham Thi Bon, the housemaid who used to work in Saudi Arabia for three years said: “I went to Saudi Arabia in 2008 and all of the fees cost me 16.5 million VND because this program did not exist back then. Now, this program gives employees with low incomes opportunities to increase their incomes and improve their lives. Before the employees sign the contract, we always want to know what employees want to do so that we can arrange the jobs based on their desires. Thien An company has sent a thousand of Vietnamese employees to Saudi Arabia to work under this program.”

With this job, the criteria for hiring are relatively simple. Apart from good health, workers need to be fast, hard-working, clean and honest. Thien An Company has a representative office in Saudi Arabia, so their staff will be there in case these housemaids need help. After the three-month probation, if any employee finds the job not suitable, the company will assist the employee to change the host family.
