On September 1, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Vietnam said that the project of technical cooperation on "Enhancing the capacity of Hue Central Hospital in responding to acute respiratory infections (COVID-19)” had just been officially launched.

Accordingly, this project will be implemented in eight months (from August 2021). The project will provide medical equipment and technical training in the use and management of the medical equipment for Hue Central Hospital. The total value of this project is about 200 million Japanese yen (equivalent to nearly 42 billion VND), which is funded by JICA.

Within the framework of the project, the medical equipment will be installed at Hue Central Hospital Facility 2. This is the place where COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms are received and given treatment.

The medical equipment is expected to include the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine, ventilator, monitor, ambulance, and dedicated deep freezer to preserve vaccines, etc. The JICA’s project will also conduct remote medical device management training for the medical equipment management department of Hue Central Hospital.

Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, said that the project on enhancing the capacity of Hue Central Hospital in responding to COVID-19 pandemic, which was funded by JICA, would make a great and sustainable impact in improving the quality of medical examination and treatment, especially in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

From 2005 to 2010, in addition to providing the medical equipment, and the construction of a high-tech center in Hue Central Hospital with non-refundable aid granted by the Japanese Government, the technical cooperation projects of JICA have helped enhancing the capacity of more than 1,000 health workers at Hue Central Hospital and hospitals at the provincial level in the central region.

Earlier in March, in order to improve the capacity in COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control, JICA had also provided Hue Central Hospital with a number of essential medical equipment and supplies.
