Contribution to the control of the pandemic

Returning after a professional training course for Phu Yen province on the prevention of COVID-19, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Binh and his colleagues kept on preparing disinfectant solution to serve the pandemic prevention. Assoc. Prof. Binh shared that on average, every day 30-50 liters of disinfectant solution had to be made to serve staff and students at the university and patients at the university hospital. There were days that approximately 100 liters had to be made to support the unit. The COVID-19 pandemic has becoming complicated, requiring each person to contribute a little bit of effort, as no one could stand aside.

Experience and awareness of the prevention of the epidemic "absorbed" into his blood since the SARS outbreak. Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh said that in 2003, the SARS outbreak occured while he was doing his PhD degree in China. At that time, amid many people feeling worried, he volunteered to help fight the disease.

“At that time, I was the President of Vietnam Student Association in Nanning - China. Seeing that people were quite bewildered, while I was a microbiologist, I proactively coordinated with universities, authorities, consulates to provide support for Vietnamese students and Chinese students. Therefore, I conducted researches and wrote a series of articles to guide, provide knowledge about SARS and participated in food and necessities supporting organizations. Now there is COVID-19 pandemic, and I want to do what I can, helping people to fight against it,” the teacher born in 1962 share.

Since the Tet holiday when the outbreak of COVID-19 occurred in Vietnam, besides taking charge of the preparation of disinfectant solution, Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh has been constantly involving in writing articles with information about the pandemic, risks of infection so that people would be less bewildered and would take proactive measures to prevent the pandemic.

He analyzed that the proper understanding of the disease and knowledge of preventive measures were just like making disinfectant solution. You had to be accurate and precise in every detail and standard to make it work effetively.

Being talked about his positions and working experiences - from the Deputy Head of Microbiology Department, Head of the Department of Infection Control, Director of Gamma Knife Centre, Hue University Hospital; or the Chairman of the Provincial Vietnam-China Friendship Association, Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh replied: “Don’t mention that. During the unpredictable pandemic, I always remind myself that I am a health professional of the Steering Committee for COVID-19 prevention and control of the university and the hospital. Not only do I finish my professional work, I also want to devote my remaining time to the prevention and control of the disease. The whole country is united, working together towards it, my mission is to contribute my humble effort”.

Consider Hue as his homeland

Usually, Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh was known as a lecturer, a health professional of the hospital or a Vice President of the Union of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, often in charge of professional work or community medical examinations, but little did we know that he always "pays attention" to scientific researches aimed at improving the quality of hospitals and controlling infections.

Accidentally, I read the proposal of the award of the title People's Teacher; it showed a series of award-winning works. Regarding researches at all levels (state, ministerial, Hue University and his school), Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh already had up to 10 researches with about 150 articles in prestigious international and Vietnamese journals, focusing on microbiology and infection control.

Among his works, such as "Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in hospital accquired infections" or "Screening for antibacterial features of some herb species that can be exploited in Thua Thien Hue" ... Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh has all contributed to reducing the risk of hospital accquired infections, improving the treatment outcomes and hospitalization environment of patients. In addition, he always aimed to study the pathogenesis of biological agent, drug resistance, diagnosis methods ... to find the best solutions for medical support and patient service.

Prof. Nguyen Vu Quoc Huy, Rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, in sharing his copliments for Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh, affirmed: "He is a prestigious teacher and well-trained scientific official. Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh had many scientific awards at all levels and he received provincial scientific and technological awards almost every year”.

Recently, the Vietnam Innovation Fund for Technology (VIFOTEC) "named" him with a consolation prize for a research project on hospital wastewater management system (a joint work with Dr. Tran Van Hoa, MSc.). According to Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh, when doing this project, he did not think of the national award but only wanted to solve the quality problem of waste water output, bringing about economic benefits, by reducing construction costs. (a 500-bed hospital only needs to build a waste water management system that costs 100-120 million VND) in the context of hospital autonomy.

In every talking, Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Binh did not want to mention his awards and achievements. He said that since he came to Hue in 1979, he considered Hue his hometown. Working with his heart, prioritizing medical ethics first, when the patient smiles, it would be the reward and joy of a medical practitioner.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Dinh Binh, Deputy Head of the Department of Microbiology, Head of the Department of Infection Control, Director of the Gamma Knife Center of Hue University Hospital, was born in 1962, in Xuan Thuy Commune, Le Thuy District, Quang Binh Province. He was also a visiting professor of pharmacy at Guangxi Medical University, China.
