When homestay becomes an art space

Not only a friendly space for guests to feel like home, the apartments adapted for homestay service in Hue have also had designated art and culture spaces with several attractive events.

A common living space for visitors and hosts to hook up

Within just a small common room or a little garden outdoor, several appealing sessions for painting, exhibiting, movies, concerts, and household arts are held.

Founded much later than other homestays in the city center, Lagom Home, located on Trinh Cong Son street along the bank of the Perfume River has become a famous destination among not only the backpackers but also art lovers near and far.

In addition to providing a quiet accommodation, these homestays periodically held art programs on a variety of fields and topics that anyone can explore.

The programs vary from a night of music meditation to an afternoon of "sewing clothes for loved ones", or a morning of creative painting... The owner of Lagom Home, Le Hong Van, a keen young artist, together with her art-loving friends, has planned such programs.

At first, the programs were simply held in response to a group of friends, but surprisingly, the homestay guests and followers on social network also share the same interest.

“I was very happy to see everyone’s positive feedback. And then the next programs were planned: sometimes a movie show, then a picture drawing or household items crafting lesson... I don’t know exactly since when our homestay became the destination for not only guests but also lovers of cultural and artistic activities on weekends,” Van said.

Not only for homestay guests, these activities also target the locals, from the elderly to young children by creating a rewarding playground in the current bustling modern life.

Experiencing tailoring

Young mothers showed special eagerness when attending a sewing session or embroidering a picture, making lipstick and soap. Meanwhile, the children were watching an interesting cartoon, then drew their own favorite works before displaying them for everyone to see. Sometimes, there were also sessions sharing minimalistic living experience or sufficient lifestyle to feel an easy and comfortable life.

As a regular participant in these activities, Hai Yen (30 years old, Xuan Phu Ward, Hue City) said that it was a source of energy both for harmonizing and refreshing life. With Yen, such activities seemed simple but gradually forgotten in the modern tech world and the fast pace of life.

“It’s such an interesting experience to make your own cloth bags to replace plastic bags or sit with everyone in the very friendly homestay space to watch movies or sing new songs. More importantly, these activities are to help me feel the value of life”- Yen shared.

Like Lagom Home, at the end of Minh Mang Street (Thuy Bang, Huong Thuy), homestay Vu of the young owner Nguyen Van Vu is known to many foreign tourists for its impressive art performances. The guests are mostly backpackers from many different countries around the world, so their cultural backgrounds are also very diverse.

Vu believes music is one of the common cultural traits that strangers can easily share, understand, and bond with each other. This has urged him to organize music exchange programs so that everyone can sing to each other.

The tourists take turns to perform traditional songs and dances of their own countries amidst the tranquility of Hue. Vietnamese guests also feel the beat and treat their foreign friends with famous songs about Vietnam and Hue in return.

Sharing household arts at Lagom Home

Vu considers his homestay a common space where music and art programs can connect everyone and enhance their understanding about people and culture. This creates not only a unique signature for the homestay, but also an engraved memory of Hue as an impressive destination on the world travel map.

“Creating a feel-like-home friendly space with meaningful artistic programs for visitors to mingle is the model that many homestays now want to adopt,” Vu affirmed this new appealing way of doing tourism.

Therefore, he and other homestay owners are adopting this model to diversify accommodation services in Hue.
