This is the first time Chan May port welcomed an international container ship to the port, officially starting the operation of container ships and marking the important first step in exploiting the function of container handling at Chan May wharf zone, under Thua Thien Hue seaport according to the master plan of Vietnam's seaport system in the period of 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister.

Chan May port is a natural deep-water seaport, capable of receiving ships of large tonnage and has great potential for expansion and development into a large and modern seaport. Currently, the port has been qualified to become the first deep-water seaport to receive and load domestic and international container ships in the North Central region.

Mr. Huynh Van Toan, General Director of Chan May port, said that the port was exploiting 2 wharves with a total length of 760m, ensuring safety with the water depth of from -9.4m to -12.5m, in which wharf No. 1 was 480m deep and wharf No. 2 was 280m deep.

“Every year, Chan May port loads and unloads about 3.5 million tons of bulk cargo such as coal, clinker cement, wood chips, sand, tapioca, etc. The port is capable of welcoming ships of 50,000 DWT; container ship of about 35,000 DWT ~ 2,600 TEU; passenger ships up to 362m and 225, 282 GRT and can fully meet the conditions and capacity to handle container goods, becoming the wharf for the world's largest and newest cruise ship,” said Mr. Toan.

Mr. Le Van Tue, Head of the Management Board of the Provincial Economic and Industrial Zone, under the Provincial People's Council, issued Resolution No. 18/NQ-HDND dated September 7th, 2022 on a number of policies to support the opening of container transport routes and targets with goods transported by containers to and from Chan May port.

Accordingly, from now until the end of 2023, the province will spend over 18 billion VND/year to support shipping lines. Specifically, container carriers at ports with a minimum frequency of 2 trips/month will receive the financial support of up to VND 210 million/trip. Enterprises, organizations and individuals importing and exporting container goods to and from the port will receive the financial support from VND 800,000 to VND 1.1 million/container.

After the policy is promulgated and applied by the Provincial People's Committee, it will contribute to attracting container shipping lines to load cargo at at Chan May wharf zone, increasing its cargo exploitation capacity and competitiveness; taking advantages to contribute to the development of Chan May wharf zone according to the master plan of Vietnam's seaport system in the period of 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050; promoting logistics services and creating breakthroughs in the development of import-export turnover of the province; creating jobs for local workers; and creating an environment to attract investment and develop other services.

In addition, goods from Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Laos and other countries in the region can be traded, which creates favorable conditions for enterprises in production and business activities and to expand production and business, and increases opportunities to promote investment in production and business in the economic zones and industrial parks in the province, etc.
