Martial arts students training at Phong Dien Taekwondo Club

Many faces recruited to the team

The petite girl Tran Nguyen Nhat Tan was brought to Phong Dien Taekwondo Club by her parents with the very "lovable" purpose of training in martial arts - that is, to eat well and reduce illness. Success came beyond expectations when Nhat Tan proved to be very gifted in "martial arts", quickly surpassing his friends and colleagues of the same age. She brilliantly gained performances from the provincial, national to  regional levels.

Tran Nguyen Nhat Tan boasts a remarkable list of performances: bronze in the 49kg weight class at the 2019 National Student Championship; silver in women's singles at the 2019 National Student Championship; bronze in team kumite at the 2019 National Youth Taekwondo Championship; gold in women's 49kg kumite at the 2023 National Student Champion, and bronze in mixed doubles kata at the 2023 National Student Championship. Thanks to her excellent Taekwondo performances and good studies, Tran Nguyen Nhat Tan was granted a full scholarship by Da Nang FPT University.

Head coach and Chairman of the Club Le Van Dat proudly said that Tran Nguyen Nhat Tan is among 10 excellent martial arts students of the club, who were recruited to the provincial team. In his view, along with Nhat Tan, the brightest and most successful face of the club is martial arts student Do Thi Yen Phi, who was awarded the title of national grandmaster. Detected during the level promotion exam at the club, Yen Phi possessed outstanding talent compared with her peers. This athlete was recruited to the provincial team, and after training in the team, she gained excellent performances in the national tournaments and was awarded the grandmaster title in 2017.

Another bright face of Phong Dien Taekwondo's "training site" can be mentioned:  National Grandmaster Nguyen Thi Trinh, women's team gold at the 2018 National Youth Championship, women's team bronze at the 2019 National Taekwondo Championship. Besides, Giap Khanh Linh was awarded an individual kumite bronze at the 2019 National Strong Clubs Championship, and Giap Van Tung got an individual kumite bronze at the 2019 National Strong Clubs Championship.

Recently, a new face appeared: martial arts student Dang Dai Phu Thinh. He has an ideal body shape. In Phong My mountain area, Phong Dien District (more than 20km from the club), Thinh was discovered by the club and invited to train. After two years of training with a special regime, Phu Thinh joined for the first time in the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Club Championship in 2023 and excellently won 2 golds and also clinched the title of Best Male Athlete of the championship.

Coming from a strong movement

Phong Dien Taekwondo Club was established in 2005 at Phong Dien Town Lower Secondary School (now Nguyen Duy Lower Secondary School). Club chairman Le Van Dat recalled the first days of its establishment with many difficulties. Without a training yard, teachers and students had to train on the ground, and when it rained, there was no place to train. There was also no training and protective equipment.

Only after a short time did the club move the training site to the Phong Dien Association of the Blind, then to the warehouse of the Phong Dien District Division of Agriculture and Rural Development. It was not until 2012, given the attention of the leaders of the Center for Culture, Information and Sports, that the club could do training in the district's gymnasium, and has been stable so far.

Since 2014, Phong Dien Taekwondo Club has always maintained 2 training sites at Phong Dien District Gymnasium and Huong Lam Primary School, Phong An Commune. The number of students in the two clubs always ranges between 190 to 220. The number of black belt students receiving the national degree is 39 students. Among them, 1 student takes 3 ranks, 9 students 2 ranks, and 29 students 1 rank.  The association's trainers were honored to be sent by the Phong Dien Division of Education and Training to train school martial arts and retrain all physical education teachers and teachers in charge in the district.

From 2014 to 2017, at the provincial Taekwondo tournaments, Phong Dien Association always had a club in the top 3 among the strongest clubs in the province. In 2018, it joined in the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Sports Games, ranked first in the entire delegation in Taekwondo. In 2019, it ranked first and second in the entire delegation at the Youth Club Championship of Thua Thien Hue Province. In 2020, it participated in the Youth Club Championship of Thua Thien Hue Province, winning the second prize in the entire delegation.

In 2022, at the Thua Thien Hue Province Sports Games, Taekwondo ranked 3rd in the entire delegation. In 2023, the club competed in the Thua Thien Hue Province Club Championship and ranked first in the entire delegation. Martial arts student Dang Dai Phu Thinh clinched the title of Best Male Athlete of the championship.

The story of Phong Dien Taekwondo Club speaks volumes for the right direction in building and developing the movement of training and competing in martial arts in general and Taekwondo in particular. The club currently has about 15 black belt students joining in regular training and instruction at the clubs.

Setting great store by the performances and the appearance of many brilliant martial arts students, head coach Le Van Dat also affirmed that the club always gives attention to ensuring the teaching quality in accordance with the training program by the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation, enhances the sense of responsibility, preserves the quality, honor and prestige of teachers, sets an example, shows love, give fair treatment to martial arts students, and respects their personality.
