Young doctor getting engaged on his career

Our story begins with Dr. Xuan's feelings when he became one of the doctors who performed major operations in the Department of Pediatric Surgical and Abdominal Emergency for the last 5 years.

These are surgeries for newborns with multiple congenital defects such as duodenal atresia, diaphragmatic hernia, congenital esophagus atresia, ... Most surgeries are emergencies. The surgeon must always be ready to perform surgeries at any time. The organs of patients’ bodies have not fully developed, so during the surgery it requires accuracy and carefulness in every move, but it must also be fast because the patients’ physical condition is weak.

The happiness and sadness of Dr. Xuan depend on the patient's condition. “Sometimes, I stay up all night long to study the medical record before difficult surgeries. There are children who weigh only a few hundred grams with multiple malformations that have been saved after surgery. That is my great happiness. And I was tormented, anxious when I was not able to save difficult cases, despite trying hard but not helping patients win their fight with death. So, with every surgery, I must focus highly to limit the risk to the lowest for patients,” said Dr. Xuan.

Always putting himself in the patients’ position, young doctor Nguyen Thanh Xuan constantly learns, and does researches to acquire knowledge for himself to help patients more. He has participated in many courses in the UK, Austria, Japan, Korea, Taiwan ... "In every course, I have made use of every bit of time to learn knowledge and experiences from foreign experts,” said Dr. Xuan.

In addition to directly participating in pediatric surgeries, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan also directly participated in employing many new techniques in the fields of laparoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, endoscopic cystectomy of bile duct and colectomy through natural orifices ...

Talking to Dr. Xuan, I suddenly remembered Mr. Nguyen Tam Ngoc's family in Dong Ha (Quang Tri). It was hard for Ngoc and his wife to have their first child after 8 years of expectation. But when he was born, he had a diaphragmatic hernia. Fortunately, he was promptly operated by doctors of Hue Central Hospital. Now he has been discharged from the hospital, healthy and able to grow up normally. "The main surgeon for the surgery of my child at that time was Dr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan. We consider Dr. Xuan as the family's savior,” said Ngoc.

Recognizing the capacity of Dr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan, in April 2017, he was appointed Deputy Director of Hue Central Hospital - Base 2. Before taking this position, he was the Deputy Head of Quality Management Department, Hue Central Hospital.

Devoting himself to community

Not only completing his professional work, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan is also an active leader of the Youth Union. He said: “I love participating in youth activities, especially the voluntary movement. From the early years of university, I still managed to participate in voluntary movements organized by the faculty and the school. At first, I participated for fun, but after each trip, witnessing the hardship and deprivation of the people, I wanted to join more because I wanted to share their difficulties”. Since then, he has always taken the time to join the voluntary movement.

In 2012, becoming Secretary of the Youth Union, Hue Central Hospital, Mr. Xuan had the opportunity to contribute more to the activities of the Union. Not only having organized voluntary activities in the province, he also boldly organized many voluntary medical examinations, free medicine supply for people in the Central and Central Highlands provinces ...

He is one of the active members in the establishment of the provincial Young Physician Association, helping young doctors have an environment to show the spirit of volunteerism ... Since the establishment until now, the provincial Young Physician Association has come to remote areas for medical examination and treatment, giving out free medicine and gifts for disadvantaged people.

To make activities such as medical examination and treatment, giving out free medicine, in addition to gathering a team of good doctors, Dr. Xuan also proposed to the Hospital Management Board to supply X-ray machine, ultrasound machine, ECG machine for effective medical examination and treatment for people.

Although the professional work is hard, he managed to participate in voluntary trips and get to villages from the highlands of Nam Dong and A Luoi to Phu Vang and Phu Loc districts ... "When coming to many villages, seeing those poor people still being "bewildered" about their health, I feel sorry for them very much. Many seriously ill people still do not know about their health conditions. There are people who have simple diseases but "do not know how to cure", so they look for treatment everywhere, and it takes them much effort and time, "said Xuan.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan is also a volunteer member of the Blood Bank of Hue Central Hospital. "I do not remember how many times I donated blood, I only knew when the patient with the same blood type needed blood urgently, I was willing to make a donation," said Dr. Xuan.

With outstanding achievements, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan has been awarded the Certificate of Merit from the Minister of Health for many years, honored to receive the Prime Minister's Certificate of Merit in 2017. Before that, he was recognized as one of 10 outstanding young doctors nationwide; and most recently, he was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Youth Union Central Committee on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Youth Volunteer Movement 1998 - 2018.
