At the end of August 2019, a brain-dead patient wished to donate organs at 103 Military Hospital in Hanoi. Upon examination and checking on compatibility of donors with two recipients (of the heart and liver transplant) in Hue, the National Center for Organ Transplant Coordination agreed for transplantation teams of Hue Central Hospital (heart transplant) and Cho Ray Hospital (liver transplant) in collaboration with surgical teams of 103 Military Hospital (Military Medical University) to perform organ removal from the brain-dead patient at 5:15 am on August 31, 2019.
The donated heart and liver were removed from the body of the brain-dead patient at 7:40 and 7:55 respectively. With the calculation and the race against time of organ harvesting teams, at 10:15 on August 31, 2019, the transplantation for 2 patients at Hue Central Hospital were performed in the same day.
The patient with heart transplantation was discharged after 3 weeks, and this is the 6th case of heart transplantation at Hue Central Hospital.
After 45 days of intensive treatment, with close monitoring of Hue Central Hospital's medical staff and the support of Cho Ray's liver transplantation team, all laboratory test values and liver function test results were all stable as the patient was ready to be discharged, being able to live like normal people. This is an attempt by Hue Central Hospital to perform the first liver transplantation in Central Vietnam.
