Forest ranger receiving the rare keeled box turtle from Thao
Through inspection, Hue city Forest Protection Department confirmed that it was a keeled box turtle, with scientific name "coura mouhoti". The turtle weighs 0.5 kilograms, being 11 centimeters long, 8 centimeters wide, and in good health. Currently, the Hue city Forest Protection Department is continuing to take care of the turtle and will release it into natural environment in the next few days.
Keeled box turtle is a rare animal with scientific value. It has been listed in endangered and threatened species list by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Keeled box turtle is distributed mainly in eastern India, China and Laos. In Vietnam, they are usually distributed in regions such as Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen, Vinh Phu, Ha Tay, Hoa Binh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An.
