Releasing the rare tortoise back to natural environment

Previously, while walking on the street, Ms. Hoang Thi Phuong Thao living on Nguyen Khoa Chiem street (Hue city) bumped into and picked up a tortoise, then she handed it over to Hue Forest Protection Department on the afternoon of February 14.

Hue Forest Protection Department affirmed that it is a tortoise with the scientific name “coura mouhoti”; weighing 0,5kg; with 8cm wide, 11cm long, and being in a good health. Hue Forest Protection Department received and took care of the tortoise until the tortoise’s health was good enough to return to the natural environment.

Coura mouhoti tortoise is a rare animal species with scientific value, and it is listed in the endangered and threatened species of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Coura mouhoti tortoises live mainly in Eastern India, China, and Laos. In Vietnam, they are often found in Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen, Vinh Phu, Ha Tay, Hoa Binh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An.
