Woodblocks in the pagodas are often used to alert and warn. Legend has it that there was a monk who had committed many unwholesome deeds. After death, he was reborn as a fish with a tree on its back. In big waves and big winds, the fish got hurt seriously. One day, the monk's master saw its suffering and advised the fish to repent, and also thanks to the master’sprayers, the fish was reborn again as a tree. The master then made the tree into a woodblock to warn other practitioners. In addition, woodblocks are also used to keep pace in chanting.
