Commemorating celebrity Dang Huy Tru - Ancestor of Vietnam’s photography
On the morning of March 12, the Alliance of Arts and Literature Association of Vietnam in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists in Thua Thien Hue and Thua Thien Hue Photography Association to hold a ceremony of offering flowers and incense to commemorate the celebrity Dang Huy Tru, the ancestor of Vietnam’s photography at the ancestral house of worship of the Dang Family (Thanh Luong village, Huong Xuan ward, Huong Tra town).

This was an activity on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the traditional day of Vietnam’s photography (March 15, 1953 – March 15, 2023) and the 154th anniversary of the day that the celebrity Dang Huy Tru brought photography to Vietnam (1869 – 2023). Attending the ceremony was Mr. Hoang Thach Van, Deputy Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists.
On March 14, 1869, on a working trip to Quang Dong, China, the celebrity Dang Huy Tru imported photographic equipment home from Hong Kong and opened Cam Hieu Duong photo studio on Thanh Ha St., Ha Noi. This was considered the first photo studio in Vietnam, paving a historic page for the development of modern photography nowadays.

From then till now, every year, on the anniversary of the traditional day of Vietnam’s photography, the photographic artists always offer incense for commemoration, as well as open exhibitions to honor celebrity Dang Huy Tri. The ancestral house of worship of the Dang Family at Thanh Luong village, Huong Xuan ward becomes a location familiar to all photographic artists nationwide.
Going through 70 years, the position of Vietnam’s photography has been upgraded step by step and reached a firm and particular position in the socio–cultural life, taking a great contribution to the revolutionary cause of the Party, and people; and, at the same time, integrating into the photography of the world, etc.
On this occasion, 46 works winning high prizes of photographic artists coming from cities and provinces all over the country were also displayed and introduced at the ancestral house of worship of the Dang Family.
