First time with 3 outstanding names

Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhi (Archery) and sisters Nguyen Thi My Hanh and Nguyen Thi My Trang (Wrestling) are three prominent names of Thua Thien Hue sports. My Hanh and My Trang are the defending SEA Games champions. With the presence of these 3 faces, for the first time, Thua Thien Hue sports had as many as  3 athletes participating in an Asian Games. As a result, athlete Nguyen Thi My Trang ranked 4th, athlete Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhi 4th, and athlete Nguyen Thi My Hanh 6th at the 19th Asian Games, held in Hangzhou (China).

Athlete Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhi was selected as 1 of 4 outstanding models of the province to attend the National Conference for Outstanding Models in September 2023 in Hanoi. Thanh Nhi, My Hanh, and My Trang are the pride of Thua Thien Hue sports.

Contributing to the glory of Thua Thien Hue sports in the international arena in 2023, there was also athlete Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh, winning 1 silver at the 2023 Asian Shuttlecock Championship; athlete Nguyen Ha Khanh Linh, claiming 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze at the Asian Youth Chess Championship; athlete Tran Viet Duy Quan scooping 1 gold at the Southeast Asian Karate Championship...

In 2023, Thua Thien Hue athletes as part of the national team participated in many international tournaments and won a total of 20 medals, including 12 golds, 5 silvers, and 3 bronzes.

Also in 2023 and currently, 15 elite athletes and coaches from Hue Intermediate School of  Physical Training and Sports join the national youth teams and teams (Athletics 1, Wrestling 5, Karate 1, Sepak Takraw 3, Archery 2, Badminton 1, Jujitsu1 and Taekwondo 1), and 1 coach joins in training at the national youth team in Jujitsu.

490 medals in 2023

Hue Intermediate School of Physical Training and Sports is where high performance sports talents of Thua Thien Hue Province are trained. The training programs of the teams are step by step improved, focusing on important sports tournaments of the year. The school's coaches and athletes are always aware of their roles and duties.

Currently, the school is training 240 athletes from 13 high performance sports teams. Among them, nearly 100 athletes live regularly in the dormitory. Training quality is confirmed. In 2023, 67 athletes were awarded the title of National Grandmaster by the National Administration of Sports and Physical Training; 48 athletes were awarded the title of National Level I (achieving 47.9%/240 training quotas).

For the first time, Thua Thien Hue sports had 3 athletes participating in the Asian Games with key sports such as wrestling, archery, Karate, and shuttlecock. They affirmed their position nationwide upon winning many golds at the national tournaments.

New experimentally - trained sports such as Jujitsu, sepak takraw, and Vovinam have made marked professional headway, initially achieving good results. At the last count, in 2023, Thua Thien Hue sports won 490 medals, including 470 domestic medals (128 golds, 128 silvers, and 214 bronzes in the domestic arenas from regional to national level) and 20 international medals (12 golds, 5 silvers, 3 bronzes).

Bold change

Focusing on building a force of athletes for high performance sports teams to compete and achieve good results at national and international tournaments in 2024 are the tasks set for the Thua Thien Hue sports in general and Hue Intermediate School of Physical Training and Sports in particular.

The targets for which Thua Thien Hue sports strive are to have athletes qualified to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, to have 15 - 20 coaches and athletes concentrated at national teams, 100 - 150 athletes reaching master level, national level 1and to win 420 - 470 national and international medals.

According to Mr. Ho Dac Quang, Principal of Hue Intermediate School of Physical Training and Sports, from the movement practice, aside from ensuring the funding sources for teams to participate in domestic sports tournaments, it is necessary to permit the increase in the quota for training gifted athletes according to the road map from 10 - 15% of athletes per year; gradually experiment with training new sports in the Olympic sports system (Wushu, weightlifting) to enhance the position of Thua Thien Hue sports in the upcoming National Games.

Also according to Mr. Ho Dac Quang, in the long run, to make a sustainable breakthrough, alongside quickly consolidating and stabilizing the unit's apparatus and organizational structure after the project to convert Hue Intermediate School of Physical Training and Sports into the Center for Sports Training and Competition is approved, the province allows the unit to apply the sports talent remuneration policies in signing the training contracts for talented athletes and coaches from outside the province. There needs to be a remuneration policy for talented athletes and coaches who made many contributions to the province's sports after they no longer compete.
