Having been a Regional University for 30 years
Hue University, formerly known as The University of Hue, was established in March 1957. According to Decree 30/CP of the Government dated 1994, Hue University was recognised as one of three Regional Universities in the country. When newly re-established, Hue University had 6 member universities, including General, Sciences, Pedagogy, Agriculture and Forestry, Medicine and Arts. Up to now, more universities and schools have been developed, namely Economics, Foreign Languages and International Studies, Law; School of Hospitality and Tourism; Engineering and Technology Faculty; International Faculty; School of Physical Education; University Branch in Quang Tri; Institutes of Biotechnology, Open Training and Information Technology, Testing and Educational Quality Assurance, Digital Transformation and Learning Materials, Socio-economic Development Research; Center for National Defense and Security Education; Student Service Center; Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Publisher; and, Science Magazine.
In 1994, Hue University had nearly 1,600 civil servants, public employees and workers. Among them, there were 27 Professors and Associate Professors, 74 Doctors, 79 Masters. To date, Hue University has more than 3,600 officials and workers, including 214 Professors and Associate Professors, 799 Doctors, 1,526 Masters, 38 Honorary Professors.
According to Mr. Le Van Tuong Lan, Acting Head of Training and Student Affairs, Hue University, in 1996, Hue University offered 60 undergraduate majors, 30 graduate majors, and a training scale of about 19,600 undergraduate and graduate students.
In 2023, Hue University provided 149 undergraduate majors, 108 master's majors and 55 doctoral majors; 63 majors for specialist doctors level I and II; 12 majors for resident doctors. The training scale in 2023 was more than 44,500 full-time students; 4,330 postgraduate students. In the period of 2019 - 2023, Hue University trained more than 45,200 bachelors, doctors, engineers, and architects; about 7,000 masters, more than 250 doctorates; and around 7,000 specialist doctors level I and II. To date, Hue University has 20% of its undergraduate training programs meeting national accreditation standards and ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance (AUN-QA).
Assoc. Prof, Dr. Le Anh Phuong, Director of Hue University proudly shared that Hue University was currently providing highly qualified and talented human resources in the fields of medicine and pharmacy, pedagogy, art, agriculture - forestry - fishery, law, hospitality and tourism, etc., for the Central Region - Central Highlands and the whole country. Through 67 years of construction and development, especially 30 years of re-establishment, Hue University has trained and awarded degrees to about 320,000 Doctors, Pharmacists, Engineers, and Bachelors; nearly 24,230 Masters and 678 Doctors. Many alumni and students of Hue University hold important positions for the overall development of the country.
Mr. Le Anh Phuong further cited, from 2014 up to now, Hue University has carried out many projects that have been applied in practice, bringing socio-economic value to the provinces of the Central Region - Central Highlands as well as the whole country. The most significant one is the project cluster “Optimizing reproductive health care for women in areas with limited resources: From research to application implementation” led by Prof. Dr. Cao Ngoc Thanh, which has been effectively applied, creating great influence. This helps the project win the Ho Chi Minh Award in 2022.

Striving to become a National University
Since the position and role of a Regional University has been affirmed, Hue Universitiy is gradually striving to become a National University. Synchronising with the new context when Thua Thien Hue is on its way to becoming a centrally-governed municipality, Hue University must, therefore, try harder to become a National University. Legal conditions, resolutions and planning that all affirm and orient Hue University to become a National University act as advantages for it.
At the end of 2023, Mr. Nguyen Trong Nghia, Politburo member and Head of the Central Propaganda Commission, had a working session with Hue University and emphasized that, the internal determination of Hue University had to be shown, in addition to the policies and orientations of becoming a National University.
To become a National University, Hue University must always focus on innovating training program content and closely following practical needs. It is necessary to review the planning, training and fostering practices. Educational innovation has to promote the role of intellectuals. It is also important to build Hue University into a specialized, intelligent university, creating a breakthrough in education with strengths, particularly focusing on educating culture, family, and people of Hue, etc.
Assoc. Prof., Dr. Le Anh Phuong informed that Hue University was currently completing an important project to become a National University. It is worth mentioning the project to develop Hue University into Hue National University and the proposal to include the task of building Hue National University in the planning of the network of higher education and pedagogical institutions in the 2021- 2030 period, with the vision to 2050 submitted to the Ministry of Education and Training. It is crucial to continue to supplement, complete, and implement key projects, such as the project to develop the University of Medicine and Pharmacy according to the National School-Institute model, aiming to reach international standards by 2045; the project to develop the University of Pedagogy into a prestigious National Pedagogical University; the project to establish the National Institute of Biotechnology in the Central Region; the restructuring project of Hue University worthy of a National University, etc.
“The entire Hue University is very united towards the goal of building a National University. We are preparing internal resources and make the most of external resources. With “the right timing, the right place, the right people”, Hue University’s status as a National University will not be far away,” shared Assoc. Prof., Dr. Le Anh Phuong.
