IPPA conference for Indo – Pacific archaeology in Hue

TTH.VN - On the morning of September 23, the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre coordinated with the Institute of Archaeology of Institutes of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association to open the 21st conference of Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association (IPPA).

The IPPA conference is the world’s largest conference dedicated to archaeology in the Indo-Pacific region. Attending the conference were Associate. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Dung, Vice Chairman of Thừa Thiên Huế Provincial People's Committee; Prof. Dr. Pham Van Duc – Vice President of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; Prof. Dr. Ian Lilley – General Secretary of Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association and over 700 researchers and Post-graduate students from 35 countries around the world, including Vietnam.

There were many different themes reported in the conference, including past archaeology from the earliest locations of people living in Indo-Pacific region to recent time. The speeches referred to new theoretical methods and high technology in field research and analyzing in laboratory. The speeches also discussed important issues in cultural heritage protection including creative and strategic approach to education and encouraging community in heritage conservation.

At the opening ceremony, the new President of IPPA, Dr. Phan Thanh Hai (Director of Hue Monuments Conservation Centre) presented the report “Hue Cultural Heritage and the Conservation”, Dr. Nguyen Giang Hai (Institute of Archaeology) discussed “The Recent Studies of Archaeology in Vietnam”
