Commemoration Ceremony of the 60th Anniversary of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc's Self-Immolation

TTH.VN - The Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in the province solemnly organized a Commemoration Ceremony on the morning of June 7th to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation (1963-2023) to protect the Dharma and the nation at Tu Dam Monastery, Su Lieu Quan Street, Hue City.

Before the commemoration ceremony, the venerable members of the provincial Executive Committee, along with the subordinate Committees and Buddhist followers, respectfully offered incense for remembrance. After reciting Buddhist prayers, Most Venerable Thich Hue Phuoc, Standing Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the provincial Buddhist Sangha, delivered a brief biography of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc.

Next, Most Venerable Thich Khe Chon, Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Head of the Executive Committee and Head of the Monastic Affairs Committee of the provincial Buddhist Sangha, sincerely expressed the remembrance of all levels of the Sangha regarding the life and spiritual practice of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc, who self-immolated to protect the Dharma and the nation.

Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc, Dharma name Thi Thuy, Dharma title Hanh Phap, secular name Lam Van Tuat, was born in 1897 in Hoi Khanh village, Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province, in the Central region of Vietnam. He came from a family of seven siblings. His father was Mr. Lam Huu Ung and his mother was Mrs. Nguyen Thi Nuong.

On June 11, 1963 (corresponding to April 20 in the leap year of the Quy Mao in the Lunar calendar), at the intersection of Phan Dinh Phung and Le Van Duyet in Saigon, Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc self-immolated to protest the discriminatory religious policies and the oppressive rule of the Ngo Dinh Diem government. His self-immolation deeply moved the hearts of millions of people worldwide. After the cremation ceremony, he left behind the "Indestructible Heart" for future generations.
