Women's wrestling with another bumper year

TTH.VN - There are more than two months left until late 2024, but it can be confirmed that Thua Thien Hue's women's wrestling has had a brilliant year of success with the top position in many leading national tournaments.

Hue women's wrestling continues to defend the championships successfully

Successfully defending the championship

Shortly after brilliantly claiming a gold medal, allowing the Vietnamese wrestling team to successfully defend the No. 1 position at the 2024 Southeast Asian Championship & Oceania Invitational held in Thailand in September, duo Nguyen Thi My Hanh and Nguyen Thi My Trang, together with the Thua Thien Hue wrestling team, continued to successfully defend the championship, with the top position of the entire delegation in the women's freestyle wrestling at the 2024 National Classical and Freestyle Wrestling Championship taking place in the first half of October 2024 in Nam Dinh City.

The 2024 National Classical and Freestyle Wrestling Championship was attended by 240 athletes from 19 provinces, cities, and units with developed sports competition movements. The athletes competed in many events: classical wrestling in weight category from 48 - 130kg; men's freestyle wrestling from 50 - 125kg; women's freestyle wrestling from 44 - 76kg. The Thua Thien Hue wrestling team competed brilliantly, earning 2 golds, 3 silvers (2 females), and 7 bronzes (4 females), thereby securing the lead won 1 year back.

Head coach of Hue's wrestling division Dinh Van Kien said that as usual, carrying off "gold" for Hue's female wrestling was still sisters My Hanh - My Trang. Two out of three silvers, which belonged to the female event, were won by Doan Thi Kim Oanh and Ngo Le Thao Nguyen. Four of the seven bronzes were won by female athletes including Nguyen Thi My Linh, Hoang Thi Anh Tho, Nguyen Thi Yen Nhi, and Huynh Thi Xuan Nhi.

No. 1 position frequently gained

Thua Thien Hue women's wrestling is no longer unfamiliar with the leading position in many national tournaments. The 2024 National Beach Wrestling Club Championship took place from July 12 to 14 in Vung Tau City (Ba Ria - Vung Tau), organized by the Department of Culture and Sports of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province in coordination with the Administration of Physical Training and Sports (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), and Vietnam Wrestling Federation, Thua Thien Hue female wrestlers demonstrated their strength and excellently won the overall first place with 4 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. The 4 prestigious golds went to 3 sisters Nguyen Thi My Hanh, Nguyen Thi My Trang, Nguyen Thi My Linh, and athlete Doan Thi Kim Oanh.

My Hanh and My Trang grew up from wrestling rings in the village

Earlier, in March, the Thua Thien Hue delegation carried off 2 golds, 7 silvers, and 5 bronzes, rising to first place in women's freestyle wrestling at the 2024 National Freestyle and Classical Wrestling Club Championship. The 2 golds belonged to the 2 reigning SEA Games champions: Nguyen Thi My Hanh, 62kg weight category, and Nguyen Thi My Trang, 57kg weight category.

Among the silver medal winners of Thua Thien Hue this time, Nguyen Huynh Xuan Nhi stood out, winning a silver in the 62kg weight category. The tournament was attended by more than 350 athletes and coaches from 18 provinces, cities, and units across the country, competing for a total of 33 sets of medals.

Bamboo is not old yet;  its shoots sprouted

According to Mr. Dinh Van Kien, compared with men's wrestling, women's wrestling was born quite late (in 2008) but is currently the most hopeful of the province's wrestling team. Since 2010, Hue women's wrestling has continuously won golds in tournaments, the most gold medals in the entire delegation in the women's freestyle wrestling in domestic tournaments, and is also the force that helps the Thua Thien Hue wrestling team break the record that no other team has ever achieved.

Thua Thien Hue women's wrestling team has an outstanding duo, the dream of many units and localities. They are two sisters from Quang Dien land: Nguyen Thi My Hanh - Nguyen Thi My Trang, who are the reigning SEA Games champions. In 2024, coupled with wrestler Nguyen Thi Xuan, Nguyen Thi My Trang was registered by the Vietnam Wrestling team to compete in the 2024 Olympic Qualifiers of Asia.

Coach Dinh Van Kien revealed that while Nguyen Thi My Hanh - Nguyen Thi My Trang are at the peak of their performance, many new faces have appeared in the women's wrestling of Thua Thien Hue. Notably, there are Nguyen Huynh Xuan Nhi and Nguyen Thi Yen Nhi. At a very young age, Nguyen Thi Yen Nhi claimed a bronze at the prestigious 2024 National Classical and Freestyle Wrestling Championship and is the hope of the wrestling of the Ancient Capital.

Finally, the position of wrestling achieved, especially women's wrestling, is attributed to the policy of choosing the young wrestling as a key sport in group 1 along with athletics, chess, taekwondo, karatedo and swimming-diving, which are the central focus of  investment in the 2021 - 2025 period.
