Hue City: Building up community’s resilience to natural disasters

TTH.VN - On the morning of May 19, the Provincial Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue coordinated with the Institute for Social and Environment Transition – International (ISET-International) – Plan International Office in Switzerland held a national workshop on the project of building up resilience to flood for the community in Thua Thien Hue province.

Attending the workshop were representatives of the Department of Dike Management and Disaster Prevention and Control, representatives of the Institute for Social and Environment Transition – International ISET, Plan International Organization in Vietnam, together with other representatives of some localities such as Binh Dinh, Can Tho, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue.

The project of building up flood resilience for the community in Thua Thien Hue province sponsored by the Institute for Social and Environment Transition – International ISET aims to identify comprehensively the strengths and weaknesses in the community’s ability to flood resilience. Hence, pointing out appropriate solutions to improve the resilience ability of 5 localities belonging to 3 communes and wards in the provincial area (including An Dong ward, Quang Tho commune, and Quang Thai commune).

The assessments in this project are carried out based on the community flood resilience assessment toolkit that has been currently used in hundreds of communities all over the world.

In the framework of the workshop, experts, managers, and representatives of localities showed 10 presentations to share results and experience to implement the project of FRMC in Vietnam, as well as carried out discussions on the ability of connecting and applying project’s lessons into the natural disaster prevention projects, policies, and plans of the community.

Addressing the workshop, Mr. Dang Van Hoa, Chief of the Provincial Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue affirmed that this was an important non-structural project for Thua Thien Hue province, helping localities in the provincial area build up investment roadmaps and plans for flooded areas, supporting in training human resources for the work of disaster prevention in the coming time.

Thua Thien Hue is striving to become a heritage city – a city directly under the Central Government. To reach sustainable development in the context of an increasingly harsh natural disaster environment, the province is trying to mobilize all resources to effectively carry out the work of natural disaster prevention, control, and mitigation. Meanwhile, the support from international organizations and sponsors contributes to minimizing damage to people, property, and the environment, as well as ensuring sustainable socio-economic development.

At the same time, the province also requests the project to keep on caring to support the next phase to contribute to upgrading community’s capacity to adapt to natural disasters and floods.
